    This impressive edition of photographic archive of Ferrez (b. France 1843-1923), considered the most important Brazilian photographer of the 19th century. The catalogue presents Ferrez's extensive work done throughout Brazil in over more than 5 decades of professional career, between 1867 and 1923. Marc Ferrez (1843-1923) toured the Northeast, North and Southeast as official photographer of the Comissão Geológica do Império do Brasil (1875-1878), and the South and Southeast as photographer of the main railways under construction and modernization at that time. Born and living in Rio de Janeiro, Ferrez also intensively documented the capital of the Empire and its surroundings. His professional and creative activity was marked by the constant pursuit of technological and language innovations, in association with great names in engineering, science and the arts. The catalogue comprises over 300 pieces from the IMS and other collections that include: original photographs and albums, glass negatives, stereoscopes, autochromes, cameras and photographic equipment, original documents and correspondence, it discusses the role of photographic imagery in the territory exploration process. in its various regions, and its construction and consolidation as an idea of nation, especially during the Second Empire and the beginning of the Republic. And at the same time, it traverses the various territories of image explored by Ferrez in his professional practice, from collodion photography to color photography, films, printed matter, and mass visual communication
